Sweet & Sour Korean Movie Review (Netflix Film)

I have mixed feelings about this movie. And I really didn’t know how to begin this review that it took me weeks before I could start writing.

Okay, so I watched it expecting a romcom but as the movie progresses, I started doubting is it really?

Faced with real-world opportunities and challenges, a couple endures the highs and lows of trying to make a long-distance relationship survive.

I guess the main reason why I’m having these mixed emotions is because I found the movie a bit different from what I expected from the trailer. And I think I’d blame the film’s ending for most of it (not all though). So let’s go straight to the ending shall we?

ABOUT THE ENDING:

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has something to say about the ending. Some may find it good and some may not like it. I didn’t really like it too at first so I watched it a few times more in the hopes that what I felt might change.

Conclusion: I still didn’t like it.

I mean I get the plot twist and I get the realistic story, but I think they could have done a better way of presenting the ending. Also, the end scene felt… cut off and incomplete. I understand that some endings are made that way but this ending didn’t resolve the main problem. It just opened some more unresolved issues. So it had me wondering will there be a part 2 for this movie?

Speaking of part 2… I’m not wishing that the main characters get back together. I just hope there was some sort of conclusion to the story. I mean nobody seemed to have gotten a happy ending. Even the main girl looked unhappy in the end. But most of all, I felt bad for the chubby guy because clearly he was used and he didn’t deserve to be a second option. Which leads me to…

THE STORY

I think the scenarios that we saw in this movie happen in real life which makes me sad just by thinking about it. In fact, it still felt heavy several days after watching the film. For me, it’s a sad story presented in a comical way and it’s not funny at all.

If the main point of the movie is to show both the sweet and sour sides of a relationship, I guess it did a good job in that area (although it showed a lot more “sours” than sweets). All throughout I was hoping that they would show that a relationship CAN work because actually it can, even in real life. But the plot twist crushed that hope for me.

Anyways, let’s not forget the good points about this movie. The actors were all amazing (I will now look out for Jang Ki-Yong future projects from now on :p). The movie was quite good overall except for the plot twist which I’m really not a fan of. Actually, it’s not the twist itself that I didn’t like because if you closely look at it, the twist made sense as well. But as I said I hope they presented it in a better way that’s not too confusing for the audience. And I wished there was some sort of closure even if it’s not a happy ending for the main characters.

More confusion:

There’s also one character that I don’t really get until now. The guard at the guy’s office? I don’t understand what he’s supposed to portray. A temptation? I mean he kept pushing Jang-hyuk to go after the other girl since the beginning but towards the end I wasn’t sure anymore which side he’s on.

verdict:

Overall, it’s a kinda okay movie, but will I watch it again? Probably not.
